Many Christians are disappointed with how churches operate. Rather than being a living, organic assembly full of spiritual life, many churches have become institutionalized. In contrast to this system, the church of the New Testament is an ekklesia of called-out people who show Christ’s fullness in their community. The book uses the euphemism of new and old wineskins to discuss church government. Rather than being headed by a single pastor, Jesus is the head of the church, and a plurality of elders equipped with the gift of pastoring are ordained in every local church. The book presents evidence demonstrating that the terms elder, presbyter, bishop, and overseer refer to the same office of governance within the church. The book discusses the various gifts and manifestations of the Holy Spirit available to every Christian. A section discusses in detail the role of women in the church and their ordination for the work of the ministry. While women are excluded from the highest office of governance, they are not excluded from ministry and are to function as apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers.
