Wonderland was real but much different than what Lewis Carroll wrote about….much darker…..much more dangerous….Earth — 2236. Corvin Wren lived in a utopian society or at least that’s what the pamphlets said, and it was true, for those few that were wealthy, living within the floating cities up in the sky with futuristic cars riding kinetic rails in the clouds but not for most people, most people, the have nots, lived in the trash heap hovels upon the ground in a place called, the Dregs, a cesspit of disease and people playing hopscotch with death. Disease, hunger, in it to win it.Corvin was a young man, definitevely in the have nots or as he often told himself, never had, never would. He was an orphan, a scavenger in the Dregs, almost 20, starving, and unbeknownst to him, the great great great many times over nephew of a man who wrote some book a long long time ago called Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. That fact, would change his life forever. He barely crawled through the tick of clocks as a scavenger in the junk yards and trash heaps that were the Dregs, selling his finds for bits of copper and barely edible food to make his way through another day.A few hours before his 20th birthday snuck up and swatted him, he was approached by a man from above, a lawyer of the Carroll estate. At first, he thought his future as made but instead of riches, he was left with a piece of shattered glass served with a generous portion of ridicule and laughter. He couldn’t really argue the point. He’d always had a strong relationship with pathetic. His slim grasp of dreams and hopes became as shattered as the shard of glass within his palm and he had no roads left, no direction that didn’t lead to more of the same, nothing and no one. He could only laugh, a hollow, empty sound, and decided to use it’s sharp edge to end himself with not a prayer but more, a resolute whimper. However, fate was a fickle bitch, an unrelenting taskmaster, and when his eyes caught his reflection between the cracks of glass, instead of endings, he was pulled into dreams, painted up nightmares with dainty hankies. Without even a how do you do he found himself landing face first into a puddle with a healthy portion of mud and piss. It wasn’t the mud or piss that really messed with him, that had happened more times then he cared to count. It was when he looked up and wiped his face that was the real kicker.Back to Fate being a fickle, demanding whore, a truth as hard as truths ever were, this time he thought she might also have a macabre sense of humor twisted up in some ugly panties. It was that or someone had spiked his sewer water with some really good shit. He found himself in a Victorian, Steampunk World, a realm where ruthless gangs ruled and magical creatures hid, crying. One of which ended up being a little green woman with super sharp teeth, batlike ears, and was digging through a trash can. Add into that some digital nonsense flickering in his eyes and he started to think it was drugs. It said ‘Welcome to the Wonderland System’. Hmm. Then it went into a little intro video, like the ones that popped out of the shops attempting to sell ya something or Old George in the Dregs attempting to get people to pay to go watch malnourished women dance in their skivvies. Ugh, the visuals. Still, nothing could be worse than where he was born and bred. ‘Wonderland — A place where gangs ruled and races and beasts were fodder to progress. The Spades, the Hearts, the Diamonds and the Clubs form a hierarchy of brutal violence but where people have a grasp at immortality, abilities and powers to take what they want and what they need. The Wonderland System — Unfortunately the Welcome Sign was stolen but have fun and try not to die.
