Like Kentucky, Missouri ultimately voted to remain in the Union after contentious debates. While voters overwhelming embraced the Union, Missouri Governor Claiborne Jackson did not–he established a government in exile and left the state government in control of the lieutenant governor. This fracturing reflected the intensely divided leadership of the state. Chapter 1 includes addresses by outgoing and incoming governors. Chapter 2 includes speeches by the state’s US senators. Chapter 3 includes speeches by US house members. Chapter 4 covers the Missouri state convention. Chapter 5 has documents related to the replacement government.
